The problem

Need a new fire alarm, and not sure where to start?

Most people come to us at one of these moments:

1

A new building, fit-out or extension that needs a system signed off.

2

A change of use, so the old alarm no longer matches the building.

3

An old panel that keeps faulting and can't be repaired any more.

4

A fire risk assessment or insurer that says the system isn't good enough.

Get the design wrong and you pay twice: false alarms, failed sign-off or ripping work out later. Get it right once and it just works.

Your guide

Designed and fitted by our own experienced engineers

We're SAFE Fire & Security Systems, a BAFE registered and NSI approved fire alarm company based on Shelah Road in Halesowen, installing fire alarm systems across the West Midlands.

SAFE was set up by best mates Martin and Adam, engineers who learned the trade at large national companies and wanted to give local businesses a more personal service. The work is led by our own experienced engineers, alongside two apprentices we're training up.

You're welcome to visit our in-house training suite and demo room to see the kit working before you decide anything. Why choose SAFE.

The right system

Conventional or addressable?

Conventional systems

Detectors are wired in zones. When one goes off, the panel shows which zone, and someone checks the area.

  • Suits smaller, simpler buildings: small offices, shops and units
  • Simple to use and maintain
  • Can be wired or wireless

Addressable systems

Every detector and call point has its own address, so the panel tells you exactly which device has triggered.

  • Suits larger or more complex sites: multi-storey offices, schools, care homes, factories and warehouses
  • Faster to find the fire, or the fault
  • Easier to link to other building systems and to change as the building changes

We design to BS 5839-1 and your fire risk assessment, and recommend the simplest system that properly protects your building. Wireless and hybrid options work well where cabling is difficult.

Specialist detection

Detection for difficult spaces

Standard point detectors don't suit every space. For high roofs, dusty areas and cable routes, we use detection designed for the job.

Optical beam detectors

A beam is sent across a large open space to a reflector or receiver. Smoke in the beam triggers the alarm. Good for warehouses, sports halls and atriums with high ceilings, where point detectors are hard to reach and maintain.

Aspirating smoke detection (VESDA)

A small fan draws air through pipes to a sensitive detector unit, often known by the brand name VESDA. It picks up smoke very early and keeps the detector in one accessible place. Suits server rooms, high-bay warehouses, clean areas and places where detectors would be damaged or tampered with.

Linear heat detection cable

A cable that detects heat along its whole length. It suits places where smoke detectors would false alarm or can't be fitted: cable trays, conveyors, loading bays, car parks and cold or dusty areas.

Interfaces

Relays, plant shutdowns and interfaces

A fire alarm often needs to do more than sound. Using relays and interface units, we link it to your other building systems so they react the moment the alarm goes off:

  • Air handling units (AHUs) and ventilation shut down so they don't spread smoke around the building.
  • Door holders release so fire doors close.
  • Access control and locked doors unlock on escape routes.
  • Lifts return to the ground floor and go out of normal service.
  • Gas valves shut off the supply, for example in kitchens and plant rooms.
  • Other plant and machinery stops, and signals go to the alarm receiving centre or sprinkler and suppression panels.

We agree the cause-and-effect with you, test every interface at commissioning and record it in your paperwork.

Four-building site
“Highly recommend SAFE Fire & Security Systems. We brought them in to manage a complex, four-building site, and the transition has been flawless. The management and office team (Adam, Martin, Donna) are responsive and great to deal with, while the engineers on the ground deliver top-level craftsmanship. What really stands out is their rock-solid knowledge of the newer BS 5839-1:2025 regulations—they don't cut corners and they know exactly what they are doing. A thoroughly professional outfit that is a pleasure to work with”

FAQs

Fire alarm installation: your questions answered

Should I choose a conventional or addressable fire alarm?
It depends on the size and layout of your building and your fire risk assessment. Conventional systems suit smaller, simpler buildings. Addressable systems suit larger or more complex sites because they show exactly which device has triggered. We'll recommend the right one at your free site survey.
What is the free site survey?
It's a short visit where an engineer looks at your building, how it's used and any existing system, then gives you a clear written proposal. There's no charge and no obligation.
Can you link the fire alarm to our ventilation, doors and lifts?
Yes. We use relays and interface units to shut down air handling units, release door holders, return lifts, close gas valves and stop plant when the alarm activates, and we test each one at commissioning.
Do you install beam, aspirating and linear heat detection?
Yes, where the building needs it. Optical beam and aspirating detection suit large, high spaces such as warehouses, and linear heat cable suits areas like cable trays, loading bays and car parks.
Can you work in schools?
Yes. Our engineers are enhanced DBS-checked, and we plan installation work for the school holidays where possible.
Who maintains the system after installation?
We can. We offer six-monthly servicing with breakdown cover on maintenance contracts. See fire alarm servicing and maintenance. Our office is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.
