THE PROBLEM

When the power goes, people need to see the way out

If a light has failed, a battery is flat or the tests haven’t been logged, you won’t find out until it matters, or until a fire officer or insurer asks for the records. As the person responsible for the building, the law expects you to keep emergency lighting working and regularly tested. Most building managers simply don’t have the time to chase it. That’s where we come in.

British Standard BS 5266-1 sets out how emergency lighting should be tested and looked after. Our guide to emergency lighting regulations explains what the law expects in plain English.

Emergency lighting testing: what happens on each visit

Every month, our engineers carry out a short functional test. Each light is switched to battery by cutting its mains supply, to check it comes on and the signs are lit.

Once a year, we run every light for its full rated duration, usually three hours, to prove the batteries still last.

After each visit we log the results in your logbook and our online customer portal. We also tell you about any light that has failed, with a clear quote to fix it.

We maintain self-contained emergency lighting, where each fitting has its own battery. This is the type used in most offices, shops, schools, care homes and industrial units.
