We're SAFE Fire & Security Systems, a BAFE registered, NSI approved and NICEIC approved company based at La Husbands, Shelah Road, Halesowen. SAFE was set up by Martin and Adam, two local engineers from Halesowen, to give local businesses a more personal service. Our own engineers fit and test every system, and most Halesowen premises are only a few minutes from our office.
The problems we find in Halesowen buildings
Emergency lighting is easy to forget, because it only has to work on the one day the power fails. These are the things we see most often:
- Monthly tests that stopped when a member of staff left, with a logbook that hasn't been filled in since.
- Fittings that come on, then fade within minutes, because the batteries are worn out.
- A shop refit or new partition walls that left part of the escape route without emergency lighting.
- Old fluorescent fittings that keep failing and cost more to keep running than LED replacements.
What the law and the standard expect
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, escape routes and exits that need lighting must have emergency lighting of adequate intensity if the normal lighting fails. The responsible person has to make sure it's in place, maintained and tested. In Halesowen, West Midlands Fire Service enforces the law.
BS 5266-1 is the code of practice for emergency lighting. The current edition, BS 5266-1:2025, came into effect on 31 October 2025. In plain terms it recommends:
- A monthly functional test of every fitting.
- An annual full-duration test, running each fitting on its battery for its full rated time.
- Checking light levels at commissioning and at least every five years.
- A logbook recording every test, fault and repair.

Installation and upgrades
Every fitting we install has its own battery and charger built in, so each one works on its own and the system is simple to extend, test and repair.
- Maintained and non-maintained fittings, chosen to suit how the building is used.
- Lit exit signs so the way out can be seen in the dark.
- Escape route, open area and high-risk task lighting, from corridors and stairs to workshop floors and plant rooms.
- LED upgrades to replace tired fluorescent fittings.
- Self-test fittings that run their own tests and flag faults, handy in larger buildings.
Testing, done for you
- Monthly and annual tests carried out and logged by our own engineers, with annual tests planned for quiet times because batteries need time to recharge.
- Faults fixed, with repairs quoted separately.
- Records online in your customer portal.
- One visit for more than one system: we can test your emergency lighting on the same visits as your fire alarm and fire extinguishers.
- We take over any self-contained system, whoever installed it.
